Welcome
From the Head of School
I would like to welcome you to the Holland Hall website.
As an independent college preparatory Episcopal school, Holland Hall prepares young people for higher education and for lives of purpose and service. Our faculty take the school’s mission seriously, to develop in every child the ability to think critically, a passion for deep and life-long learning, and an eagerness to care and to serve.
While we offer a rigorous program designed for students motivated to excel at selective colleges and universities, Holland Hall offers much more than outstanding academics. Our faculty develops the whole child. Arts, athletics, service learning, and character development each matter greatly to our community.
Father Tony Jarvis, an Episcopal priest and headmaster of Boston’s Roxbury Latin School for 30 years, often wrote about helping children to develop confidence and compassion. Both qualities are essential if a child is to achieve a productive, ethical and fulfilling life. Jarvis interviewed thousands of people during his career. He often asked them to explain how their teachers and parents taught values and character. Overwhelmingly, the most common answer he heard was simple. “They set a good example.”
While I am new to Holland Hall, it is already evident to me that the Holland Hall Family — teachers, coaches, students, parents, grandparents and alumni — “live” this lesson. They understand the power of modeling. They embrace the values that define our school and its compelling mission. Both children and adults at Holland Hall set the example, by demonstrating respect for self and others, learning and growing through hard work and effective time management, persevering in the face of adversity and embracing diverse people in a complex, changing world. Importantly, teachers at Holland Hall see themselves as learners, setting an example that lends humility, purpose and direction to our strong community of learners.
Holland Hall is a special place. I encourage you to peruse this site and visit us at 81st St. and Yale. Come learn how we prepare children and young adults for college and for lives of purpose and service.
I look forward to seeing you on campus.
Sincerely,
