Lessons & Carols Alumni Guest Choir

You’re invited to join the 55th Anniversary Lessons & Carols Alumni Guest Choir!

In Memory and Honor of Mr. David Rollo (1942-2017).

Five years ago, 60 alumni and faculty joined with the Holland Hall Concert Choir at Trinity Church to mark the 50th Anniversary of Lessons and Carols, one of Holland Hall’s longest-standing traditions. The service — conducted by current choir director, Steve Dyer, and long-time previous choral director, now deceased, David Rollo — brought together the Holland Hall community to celebrate the rich history of our affiliation with the Episcopal Church and strengthen our ties to the traditions of the past.

We are pleased to announce that we are inviting alumni to once again participate in Lessons and Carols at this year’s 55th Anniversary service on Sunday, December 9th at 5:00 pm!

This year’s service will be held in memory and honor of Mr. Rollo (1942-2017). Mr. Rollo was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the Holland Hall arts department and was the musical director for 29 Lessons and Carols services, continuing to attend every year after his retirement until his passing in 2017. The Service of Lessons and Carols was Mr. Rollo’s favorite musical event at Holland Hall!

We hope many of you will once again join with us for this special occasion! For further information and to sign up to participate, please click here to RSVP.

Service Information

Alumni, faculty, and staff will be seated in the front center section of the sanctuary and will join with the Concert Choir for three songs. Combined selections will be Adeste Fideles by Robert Shaw, On this Day Earth Shall Ring by David Cherwien, and A Blessing by James Chepponis. All participating alumni and faculty will be singing the opening verse to Once in Royal David’s City during the candlelight processional.

Don’t worry if your singing skills are a bit rusty as all songs can be easily accomplished during our rehearsal time. If you have specific questions in regards to the music, please contact Steve Dyer sdyer@hollandhall.org or (918)879-4781.

Rehearsal will be at Trinity Church from 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm with the performance to follow at 5:00 pm. There will be a gathering for all attendees in the Great Hall immediately following the service with a reception for alums, faculty, and staff at McNellie’s Public House Restaurant in the Brady District at 6:45 pm. Food and drinks complimentary.

Please contact Steve Dyer with any questions at sdyer@hollandhall.org or (918)879-4781.

The History of Lessons & Carols.

Lessons & Carols at Holland Hall dates back to the 1960s. The service follows the King’s College Chapel version that begins in darkness, with a lone chorister singing the first verse of “Once in Royal David’s City” from the back of the church, followed by a candlelight procession through the sanctuary. Scripture readings alternate with choir anthems and congregational singing.
