Fall 2020 Grades, Comments, and Conference information
October 23 marks the midpoint of our first semester. At this grading period, we highly encourage all parents and students to sit together to check gradebooks for each class on PowerSchool between October 23 at 4 p.m. and October 25 at midnight (5th -12th grades). In doing so, you will see the current midterm averages in each class as well as any missed assignments or low grades. The midterm averages are a snapshot of how a student is doing in classes. The only average recorded on report cards and transcripts are the semester averages.
All students who are new to Holland Hall as well as those who have a grade below 70% will receive written comments from teachers. In addition, we have a window of time for you to schedule virtual conferences with your child’s advisor from November 6-13.
In the Primary School, each student will be assessed and checklists will be mailed to all families prior to conferences. The checklists provide an overview of your child’s skill set in all areas of development.
In Middle School, School Skills benchmarks will be sent home to all families. These benchmarks, as well as overall performance, will be discussed in more depth during the virtual conferences with advisors.
In the Upper School, advisors will be provided with feedback about student performance in classes to be discussed at conferences. New students’ families will receive a full set of comments in the mail so that you can have more information about the transition to a new school. Students with an average below 70% in a given class will receive a written comment in order to have more information about improvement during the second half of the semester.
Late Start Wednesday
Every Wednesday, the Primary and Middle schools have a 9 a.m. late start. Upper School Morning Meeting starts at 8:45 a.m.
- In the Primary School, students may arrive at 7:50 a.m., if needed, and go to their classrooms. PreK and EPK students should be dropped off at Before-School Care, as always.
- In the Middle School, the building opens at 8:45 a.m. Before-School Care remains available at 7 a.m. in the Tandy for students who arrive early. Holland Hall will provide complimentary Before School Care from 7:45-8:45 a.m. At drop-off each morning, all students will walk through our Thermal Imaging Scanners.
- In the Upper School, students may arrive early, as in years past. They are asked to sit in a socially distanced manner in the Commons until 8:30 a.m.
We need your contact information
Parents, our new software system should soon make your life easier! The Parent Portal will be the place to find billing, your student’s schedule, a student directory and more. But we need your help! Even longtime Holland Hall families need to update their information.
Please log on to go.hollandhall.org/parentportal and update your information or make sure you’ve already done so. You will select the “Family” tab, and click on the topic areas on the left-hand side of the screen, or the headers at the top of each box, to update your information.
This allows us to:
- Send emails to the right address to keep you informed about the school and your student.
- Contact you in an emergency.
- Update our popular student directory so you can get class birthday party invites, messages from friends and more. This information is for our community’s use only and should not be shared.
Please make sure to add:
- A Household email and phone number. This should be the email and phone number that you want to receive school emails and calls.
- A Main email and phone number for each parent or guardian.
- Other emails and phone numbers that will be used in case of emergency but will not be published in the directory.
- Your name as you want to be addressed.
- Your Household Salutation or mailing name(s) — for example, John Doe and Jane Jones or Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.
The Dutch Exchange, Holland Hall’s uniform exchange shop, will be accepting your gently used uniforms on Wednesday, October 28. There will be two collection times — 8:30-9 a.m. and 3-4 p.m. — in front of the Tandy main entrance.
The shop accepts gently used, clean with no stains, shirts for all branches, skirts and pants for primary school, skirts for MS and US and Dutch Wear. It is well stocked with khaki shorts and pants at this time.
Please have skirts on hangers.
The Exchange is free for families and is open for shopping on the third Wednesday of every month from 3-4 p.m. It is located in the Tandy in front of the Cochran Alumni Center.

ARTWorks Gallery Opening featuring painter Eric Tippeconnic
October 27, 2020 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Meet the artist while viewing his collection in this come-and-go event in Holland Hall’s Holliman Gallery in the Walter Arts Center. Works will be for sale during the event. Enjoy appetizers, beer and wine. $25 per person. Open to the Holland Hall community. 21 years and older. Social distancing will be in place and masks will be required.

As the holidays approach, questions about travel have been coming up. We always encourage mask wearing, physical distancing, and hand hygiene, of course, but here is the best single source we’ve found to help you plan as safely as possible. Transparency and COVID-19
Holland Hall is committed to transparency and will update a spreadsheet on the school’s website daily with any positive cases on campus. The numbers — if there are any — will be reported by branch (Upper School/WAC; Middle School/Tandy; Primary School). Nurse Linda Christensen is responsible for contact tracing this year and will inform anyone with direct exposure personally.
If your child is absent
Please let your branch assistant know why your child is absent when calling in the morning.
Daily Health Forms
Parents, please get into the habit of completing the daily health form for your children before arriving on campus. You’ll need to fill it out for each child after you take his or her temperature in the morning.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
Upper School Parents’ Association Meeting Date Change
The meeting will be at noon Thursday, October 22. The featured speaker is Art Scrutchins, who will be speaking about the Episcopal identity of the school.
Yearbook Senior Ads
Senior Parents, yearbook ad contracts are due Nov. 1, 2020. Please submit using this form. If you have chosen the option of having the yearbook staff design and produce the ad, all text and photos are due Friday, Nov. 20. If you are providing an ad produced elsewhere — by yourself or a professional graphic designer — the final file is due Jan. 15, 2021.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
In Middle School, students are not allowed to have their cell phones with them during the school day. The expectation is that they are off and in lockers from the time they arrive until the time they pack up at the end of the school day. Please help us by discussing and supporting this from home. If you need to get a message to your child, simply call the middle school office and we will get that message to them in a very timely manner.

We know that there will be times when you need to pick up your child early or in the middle of the day. If this need arises, please let Ms. Danner and your child’s advisor know via email what time your child needs to be in the office to be picked up. Advance notice will allow us to find the student and be sure he/she is ready when you arrive! If you are dropping your child off at school late or after an appointment, just send the child in to the Middle School office, parents do not need to escort them in.
As a reminder, we are trying to limit visitors in the building. If your child forgets something, there is a plastic bin just outside the main Middle School doors that will be checked once before lunch and once again in the afternoon. Please clearly label what you are dropping off so that we can get it to the correct person!
PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS
The dates for virtual parent-teacher conferences are Friday, November 6 and Monday, November 9 through Friday, November 13. Be looking for sign-up information from your child’s teacher.
Please remember that the drop-box in front of the PS is for forgotten supplies (homework, books, etc.). Please DO NOT bring lunches and leave them in the box. Our staff is not always immediately available to collect and deliver the items. If you child forgets their lunch, we have a supply of heavy snacks to supplement them for the day.
