Why does Holland Hall have an Annual Fund?

Holland Hall, like most Independent Schools, is supported by tuition and financial support from the generosity of our donors. The gifts made to the Annual Fund are an essential source of funding for the school. Everyone’s gift to the Annual Fund matters; when everyone gives to the Annual Fund,

  • Opportunities to apply for and receive grants are expanded
  • The act of giving promotes cooperation and social connection
  • Financial strength creates an environment for planning for the future, attractive to prospective families
  • You are telling others that you care about Holland Hall’s future
  • You have the satisfaction of knowing you paid it forward by giving back and investing in the next generation.

How do I know how much to give?

The amount you decide to give is based upon your own personal circumstances. Gifts to Holland Hall are tax deductible and you may choose to obtain advice from your tax professional about the benefits of making a donation to the school.

Many of our donors decide to make a pledge at the beginning of the school year and pay-out their gift in two to four consecutive payments, so they can give at or above the Head of School Circle level and enjoy the benefits of being a member of the Schureman Circle Giving Society. What are the benefits of being a member of the Schureman Circle Giving Society?

Schureman Circle is named after the first headmistress of Holland Hall, Miss Winnifred Schureman. At the suggestion of Miss Schureman, who was of Dutch descent, the school was named Holland Hall.  Schureman Circle members are the dedicated parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the school who give $1,000 or more in a fiscal year to the Holland Hall Annual Fund.

Schureman Circle donors are invited to the anxiously anticipated special recognition event in the spring, “Evening of the Arts.”  Schureman Circle donors are recognized in the Annual Report, in addition to being listed at their giving level.

What is the Holland Hall Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is the foundation of institutional advancement at Holland Hall and is a significant source of funding. As an Independent School, Holland Hall is not government funded, and instead relies upon a combination of tuition, donations, special events, and the yield from investments and endowments. And, because the school does not receive government funding, Holland Hall has the freedom to define the unique mission of the school, admit students that meet or exceed the rigorous academic guidelines, attract and retain high quality teachers, and choose the methods to assess student achievement and progress.

Where do Annual Fund donations go?

Your gift to the Annual Fund has immediate impact on the student experience. It supports academics, arts, athletics, faculty, technology, and financial aid. Your support to the Annual Fund takes the education offered at Holland Hall from ordinary to unique and remarkably memorable.

What kinds of donations can I make to Holland Hall?

A gift to Holland Hall can be as simple as making a pledge or writing a check and there are secure online options on our website to make a gift using your credit card. Other kinds of donations include gifts of stock, matching gifts by an employer, and including the school in your estate planning.

Is my gift tax deductible?

Yes, gifts to Holland Hall are tax deductible. You will receive a receipt in the mail shortly after making a donation.

How do I make a memorial gift, or a gift in honor of someone?

Making a memorial gift or in honor of someone is easy. There is a clearly labeled field in the online giving form and the pledge envelopes where you can specify the honoree. You may also make the notation on your check or provide written correspondence to indicate the gift is in honor of someone.

Memorial gifts and/or gifts made in honor of someone are listed in a special area of the Holland Hall Annual Report. A note is sent from the office of Institutional Advancement to the family of the loved one or the honoree to notify them of the gift.

Can I designate my gift for a special purpose?

Yes, you can designate your Annual Fund gift to academics, arts, athletics, faculty, technology, or financial aid. The Board of Trustees retains the discretion to use annual giving to support general operations should contributions to a particular purpose exceed the expenditure limis provided in the operating budget.
