Grades
Holland Hall's marking system is as follows: A (90-100)=Highest Honors; B (80-89)=Honors; C (70-79)=Satisfactory; D (60-69) = Passing and College-recommended. Holland Hall's grade point average is computed on a 4-point scale with Honors and Advanced Placement courses slightly weighted by receiving an additional value of .34. In calculating grade point averages, all courses are included except physical education, athletics, community service, junior seminar, wellness and driver education. The average reflects only courses taken at Holland Hall.
Holland Hall grades appear to be a fairly reliable predictor of college grades. A recent comparison of first-year college grades of Holland Hall graduates with their high school GPA reveals a statistically insignificant difference of 0.12 on a 4-point scale.
Notes of Interest
The following courses taken by Holland Hall Middle School students follow the same curriculum as equivalent courses in the Upper School: Latin I, II, Spanish I, II, French I, II, Algebra I, II, Geometry. These courses are given high school credit and apply toward Holland Hall's Upper School graduation requirements.
Holland Hall's modular schedule encourages student responsibility for scheduling approximately 40% of his/her own school time. Holland Hall students enter college with considerable experience in time management and organization. Holland Hall offers, but does not require, special preparation for students taking the PSAT, SAT, and ACT.
Normally, students who transfer from local public schools into the school find their letter grades approximately one full grade below their previous record. Given a selective admission policy, students graduating from Holland Hall would probably rank in the upper half of a general school population; the upper half of Holland Hall's students would probably rank within the top 10% of the general school population.
