Upper School Day in the Life

In the upper school, students dive into challenging coursework and unique electives, lead clubs and student organizations and participate in a variety of athletic and artistic opportunities. No two days are the same — the upper school operates on a six-day class cycle. Each day has 18 modules (mods), 22 minutes each, with 2 minutes of passing time between mods. Each class varies from two to three mods long based on the needs of the class. During unscheduled mods, students can meet with teachers, eat lunch, study or spend time with friends.

I transferred to Holland Hall in fifth grade from a big public school. It provided me with a more personalized education, led by teachers who knew me, my interests, and how to challenge me in ways that made learning exciting. At Holland Hall, I felt seen, heard, and supported. Because Holland Hall allowed me to explore my interests, I know I’m ready for my journalism studies at the University of Missouri.

The faculty care about you as an individual student. If you have a problem, they’ll try to help you solve it your way. They really get on your level to understand where you’re coming from. They know you on an individual level. It’s just very supportive.

As soon as I walked in the doors of Holland Hall, everyone was so inviting. I toured other schools, and none of them had a welcoming atmosphere like this one. It was the little things, like people would hold the door open. People were respectful, and I really liked that about this place.

I was friends with all of my grade. I could have a nice conversation with every single person. At Holland Hall, a lot of those typical walls aren’t there. I played football, but I was also in theater, band, and Student Council. And every time I joined any of those, I felt welcomed.

As a freshman, I was in classes with seniors, and that changed my life. It made me feel accepted for who I am.

As an independent school, Holland Hall does not receive funding from local or state government. Funding for most of the school’s operations comes from our endowment and gifts to the Holland Hall Fund. About 83 percent of tuition dollars go straight to faculty salaries and professional development.

The endowment and Holland Hall Fund also help the school award more than $5 million each year in tuition assistance to families, which helps bridge the gap between what they can contribute and the price of tuition. About 30 percent of the student body receives some tuition assistance.

Making Holland Hall Possible

Cost should never be a barrier to the Holland Hall experience.  We are committed to enrolling students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and critical thinking, regardless of their family’s ability to afford the cost of attendance.  We are here to work with families to ensure that financial circumstances do not create a barrier to a Holland Hall education.

What is financial aid?
Financial aid is tuition assistance for families with demonstrated financial need. The Holland Hall financial aid program is designed to make a Holland Hall education possible for all families based on demonstrated financial need and the availability of funds. We are proud to use the Clarity Application to determine a family’s level of financial need based on the information that families share in the application, which includes assets, income, expenses, and debts.

Tuition Assistance FAQs

What is Tuition Assistance

Tuition assistance is available as either a merit award or financial aid grant given to a qualifying family to offset the costs of a Holland Hall education. It is NOT a loan. The grant does not have to be repaid.

What percentage of Holland Hall students receive tuition assistance?

30% of the entire student body receives tuition assistance.

Will applying for financial aid affect the admission decision?

No. Holland Hall accepts students solely based on academic merit, community involvement, test scores, teacher recommendations, and personal qualities. Financial aid files are reviewed, and awards are determined only after a student has been admitted.

When are students eligible for financial aid (i.e. at what age)?

Financial aid is available to Holland Hall students entering Kindergarten-12th Grade. Students in Kindergarten-3rd Grade usually receive no more than 50% of tuition. Students in 4th-12th Grade are eligible to receive higher awards than students in the lower grades.

How is the amount of financial aid determined?

Financial aid is determined by the difference between the tuition charged and the family’s ability to pay. Clarity Tuition sends Holland Hall a Suggested Tuition Breakdown, which makes a general recommendation about a family’s ability to pay. The breakdown does not bind Holland Hall to a specific award. The Financial Aid Committee reviews the Clarity information and applicable tax forms and determines all awards in light of demonstrated need and the limits of the financial-aid budget. All information is highly confidential. Please contact an admission officer or see the Financial Aid Guidelines for additional information.

Is tuition assistance automatically renewed?

No. It is necessary to reapply yearly, and the awards will change if the family’s financial circumstances change.

I never do my taxes until close to the April 15 deadline. How will this affect my financial aid award?

Your 1040 and W2 documents will be automatically transferred from the IRS when you complete the verification step on your Clarity Tuition application. If Holland Hall receives verification of the materials after the deadline, we cannot guarantee that any funds will be available.

If we are divorced or separated, do both parents need to complete the tuition-assistance paperwork?

Yes. Both parents (and new spouses, if remarried), regardless of whether they have custody, must submit tuition-assistance forms and tax information.
