More than 300 students visited one of 20 philanthropic agencies across Tulsa on Thursday to participate in the annual Upper School Day of Service.
Run by students for the third straight year, the Day of Service gave Upper School students hands-on experience with local nonprofits such as the SPCA, Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, the Dream Center, Iron Gate, and more.
With Dean of Student Life Philippa Kelly providing oversight, 17 students on the Day of Service Committee began planning this year’s event in October with weekly meetings.
While the recent winter snowstorm caused some last-minute logistical issues, the event was a success and always makes a lasting impact on our students.
Here’s what a few students had to say about their Day of Service:
“This year, our Student Council motto is getting comfortable in the uncomfortable. Day of Service speaks to that really well because we’re able to do something out of our comfort zones … we can learn our own ways to serve other people and be humble.” — Ali Hibbard, Junior
“I am so grateful, because I am helping other people like God wanted me to, and that really makes me happy.” — Riley Alford, Freshman
“It’s definitely a Holland Hall tradition that I will miss” when I graduate. — Ames Wheeler, Senior
“Our hope is that students learn a new charity and want to go back and continue to serve the Tulsa community. And maybe you make a couple of new friends along the way.” — Madison Watts, Junior
The committee members are:
Seniors: Harper Jones, Landry Nowlin, Marley Wilkerson, Lizzie Cameron, Maggie Flegler, Naomie Steele
Juniors: Emily Bergenroth, Madison Watts, Addison Hendren, Ali Hibbard, Jeremy Sullivan, Londyn Price, Sophia Gillette, Sarah Myers
Sophomores: Sarah Solomon, Kacky Schenk, Francesca Cuzalina
