Greg Spencer is a long-time boys and girls head cross country coach at Holland Hall. The South Carolina native is also an assistant athletic director and assistant track and field coach. A Holland Hall graduate (Class of 1999), Spencer graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, in 2003 with a degree in Mathematics. He also ran cross country and track at Hendrix. An avid runner and hiker, Spencer has run a marathon in 25 states with a goal of running one in all 50. He’s also accomplished the rare feat of completing the Appalachian Trail (2,194 miles), the Pacific Crest Trail (2,653 miles) and the Continental Divide Trail (3,208 miles) hiking trails. Spencer is one of five siblings to graduate from Holland Hall and his father, Richard, recently retired from a long career here while his mother, Millie, still teaches in the Primary School.

“I like to share my passion of running with younger kids and show them that running can be fun and a life-long activity. It’s a sport anyone can do no matter how fast you are.”

Brian Thompson is the head football and Wellness teacher at Holland Hall. He’s also the head track & field coach. A Tulsa native, BT — as he’s known around campus — graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1988. He then graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also played football for the Hurricane. An almost 30-year veteran at Holland Hall, he’s known for his encyclopedic knowledge of 80s music and artists.

“I coach because I love it and athletics has always been a big part of my life. I learned so many lessons and values through participating in team sports from a young age through college. My hope is that all of our players value being a part of a team and enjoy competing with friends and classmates. I love that they learn that they are all dependent on each other, and learn how to navigate that and be accountable to each other.”

A Tulsa native and 1992 Holland Hall graduate, Christy Utter is the head girls field hockey coach and Middle School chaplain. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina in 1996. In 2004, she earned her master’s degree in Sport Administration from the University of Louisville. She played field hockey at North Carolina and won two NCAA national titles and four Atlantic Coast Conference titles with the Tar Heels. Has a twin brother who played football at the University of Tulsa and loves collecting snow village pieces.

“I believe sports are a vital tool, especially for girls, but boys too, to gain self confidence, to learn how to work with people who have different talents, views and work ethics, to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and improve, to be a part of an incredible journey with a trusted group of people, and to see success in the small and big things throughout a season.”
